Monthly 50/30/20 Budget Quick-Start Checklist
This checklist is for anyone who wants a clear snapshot of where their money goes each month and how it lines up with the 50/30/20 rule.
Gather Your Financial Data
- Collect your last 30 days of bank statements, credit‑card statements, and cash receipts.
- Note your total net income for the month (salary, side‑hustle earnings, etc.).
- Create a simple table with two columns: "Category" and "Amount".
Categorize Every Expense
- List each expense under one of three buckets: Needs (rent, utilities, groceries, insurance), Wants (dining out, streaming, hobbies), Savings/Debt (emergency fund, retirement, loan payments).
- Enter the dollar amount for each line item in the table.
- Sum the amounts in each bucket and record the totals.
Calculate Your 50/30/20 Percentages
- Divide each bucket total by your net income and multiply by 100 to get a percentage.
- Write the percentages next to the bucket totals.
- Compare each percentage to the target (Needs ≤50%, Wants ≤30%, Savings/Debt ≥20%).
Identify Quick Wins
- If Needs exceed 50%, highlight any non‑essential expense (e.g., subscription you rarely use) to cut.
- If Wants exceed 30%, pick one discretionary item to reduce or pause next month.
- If Savings/Debt are below 20%, set a concrete amount to transfer to a savings account after paying bills.
Set Your Next‑Month Action Plan
- Write down one specific change you’ll make for each bucket (e.g., “Cancel gym membership” or “Increase emergency fund transfer by $50”).
- Schedule a 10‑minute reminder on the first day of the next month to review the changes.
- Save this completed checklist as a reference for future months.
