Lesson 3: Find the first clients

Your first clients usually come from people who already know you.

Tell 30 people

Make a list of friends, former coworkers and local contacts. Send a short personal message saying what you now offer and who it's for. Ask for an introduction, not a favor.

Go where buyers already are

Local groups, community boards, freelance marketplaces and industry forums. Answer questions helpfully first; promote only where the rules allow.

Show proof

Two or three examples, before-and-after photos or short testimonials do more than any description. Do a small project at a fair price if you need your first examples.

Do this today

Write your contact list and send the first five personal messages.
